La fundación de Madrid se debate entre la leyenda y la historia. Según dice D. Ramón de Mesonero Romanos (primer cronista oficial de la Villa ): " Madrid tiene susaduladores panegirístas que trataron de rebuscar su origen en la más remota antigüedad, enlazándola con héroes mitológicos". Así, desde los siglos XVI y XVII, como consecuencia del traslado de la Corte, los cronistas de Madrid quisieron dotarla de una rancia alcurnia y retrotrajeron sus orígenes a diez o más siglos antes de la fundación de la propia Roma, a muy pocos años después del diluvio universal, atribuyendole más de 4.000 años de existencia.

The foundation of Madrid struggles between legend and history. According to D. Ramón de Mesonero Romanos (the city’s first official chronicler), “Madrid has admirers who have sung its praises and tried to date its origins as far back as mythological heroes”. From the XVI and XVII centuries, as a result of the transfer of the Capital, Madrid’s chroniclers wanted to give it an ancient lineage going back ten or more centuries before Rome was founded, a few years after the world flood, meaning it would have been in existence for over 4,000 years.
