Let us first start by looking at passive resistance. It seems strange to use the word passive which in itself is a contradiction to the meaning of resistance. It seems more appropriate to use the term covert or hidden resistance. As previously mentioned, this type of unarmed resistance included such actions as smuggling and maintaining Jewish culture through various means including education, religion and literature. Despite the lack of recognition given to this type of resistance, some scholars have realised the importance of such resistance. Battrick states that “non-combative resistance… was not only as important as armed resistance, but also... the only feasible option.”

Beginnen wir damit, uns passiven Widerstand näher anzusehen. Es mag uns seltsam erscheinen, das Wort passiv zu verwenden, da es an sich im Widerspruch zur Bedeutung von Widerstand steht. Battrick führt dazu aus, dass "nicht kämpfender Widerstand… nicht nur gleich bedeutend wie bewaffneter Widerstand war, sondern auch… die einzige mögliche Wahl."
