If somebody asks me what I think the leadership is, I would confidently say that leadership is the power that makes all of members have their own vision under the one goal of the organization. My belief has been made from my careers and diverse experience of leadership.
At first, I was at a loss in the situation but had to play my role as another mediate manager. However, the serious situation would be the most beneficial experience for the person who want to learn the organization management skills in the cross cultural environment since the organization culture could be set up by oneself, I thought. From my analysis, we had causes of the problem from two parts; first one from cultural ignorance and language barrier between British president and his people, second one from general manager’s harsh attitude to employees and the absence of the system to give the feed back about leadership to head office. Since I believe that the ideal leader should offer the working environment that enable employees to have open communication and flexible opinion exchange, I thought I should have to solve this problem and to improve organization atmosphere. |

Though at first I was at a loss, I realized that this difficult situation provided a valuable opportunity to hone my management skills in a cross-cultural setting. My previous business experience had taught me that an essential component of leadership is the ability to foster individual visions that contribute to a unified goal for the organization. However, the pervasive frustration and lack of communication in my workplace deterred employees from sharing in the company’s goals. After analyzing the situation, I concluded that our problems stemmed mainly from two causes: first, the cultural and language barriers between the Korean employees and the British president, and second, the absence of a system that would allow employees to provide feedback to the Headquarters about their managers. I believe that a productive work environment requires the open exchange of ideas, and I took it upon myself to promote communication and cohesion in our branch. |
